AKTAU (White mountains) and KATUTAU (Lava rock)
The chalky mountains of Aktau are a world-famous paleontological deposit. In the crevices foundrd traces of extinct subtropical plants, fossils of the most ancient animals - crocodiles, turtles and giant rhinos - living on Earth 25-30 million years ago.
To the west of Aktau lie the Katutau Mountains, which can be translated as harsh mountains. In the Permian period, about 240 million years ago, two large volcanoes operated at this place. The mountains are composed mainly of lava and related rocks. The beauty of Katutau is comparable to the lifeless Martian landscape.
