ALTYN EMEL

Altyn-Emel is a national natural park located in the valley of the Ili River in Kazakhstan. The park opened on April 10, 1996 in order to preserve a unique natural complex, archaeological, historical and cultural monuments, rare and endangered species of plants and animals. On the territory of the park with a total area of 520 thousand hectares, one can meet various landscapes: mountainous, sandy-desert, gravelly, desert.
The flora of the park has about 1,800 plant species, among them 21 species are in the Red Book of Kazakhstan, about 60 species are rare forms that found only in the Dzungarian Alatau and in the basin of the Ili River and Lake Balkhash. Of the animals living in the park, 56 species considered rare, listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan, among them argali, kulan, and gazelle.
The park has many unique natural and historical sites of great importance.
